Rising out of the Sarthe countryside stands La Garencière; our peaceful, tranquil 19th century farmhouse. Surrounded by nearly 7 acres of gardens we have plenty to keep us occupied, yet space to relax in. If we want some company we're just 40 minutes from the city of Le Mans, with its world famous racetrack, and less than an hour from Paris by train. Our nearest town is Alencon.

Two hundred years ago, while Napoleon languished on Elba, La Garencière was a mixed farm, of several hundred acres, a 'Petite Maison' with attached bake house. An orchard providing apples, pears and plums surrounding the animal areas. Pigs, cows, sheep and chickens. It existed like this until the end of the 20th century when the farmer sold off most of the arable land and left a large farmhouse, barns, outbuildings, small house and the boulangerie as a family home and more recently a chambres d'hôtes.

For twenty years le propriétaire précédent welcomed guests for summer relaxation, the 24 hour Le Mans race and autumn weekends. Homegrown apples were turned to cidre and rillettes always on offer with home cooked dinner and breakfast from the village boulangère.

As the current custodians of La Garencière we have continued the Chambre d'hotes for the past 4 years.

From 2018 we welcome our friends, family and ‘the lucky few’ to enjoy our home, our hospitality, the love of our dog and the tranquility. We are no longer a B&B. We came here in our retirement, hoping to have relaxed, happy holiday-makers share the home that we love - this was true for 95%+ of guests.
But the unpleasant 5% have brought us to this decision. We don't think we should have to deal with the lack of respect for both us and our property that we have had to endure over the last four years, or keyboard warriors waiting until they get back home to post bile on Tripadvisor, because we politely asked them to moderate their behaviour. Those that believe they are in some way 'special people' because they once bought a Sawday's book are free to seek out boutique service at budget prices elsewhere.
We are once again a luxurious family home - A private and special place.

That's not to say that La Garencière is without meaning or purpose. A custom, professional vocal studio is located within its depths. Meg is a professional actress of nearly 30 years and alongside David they run a successful Voice Over business. The only noise that the soundproof walls have to contend with are the nighttime squawk of the owls and the occasional rumblings of a passing tractor.

La Garencière is a strong, determined building. However it is also yielding, changing its beautiful face to diverse use through the years. Who knows what personalities, characters, professions and stories will live within its walls in the years to come?
